Is it fair for children, in this day and age, to have to walk 2-3 miles to school?
Since it appears most schools hold this policy, who would be the person/department/government I need to contact on this issue? I don’t even have a child in school but I just think it’s ridiculous!

Monday was the first day of school here and the line to pick up took 30 minutes. (Middle School) I asked my daughter why and she said that parents want to pick up on the first day of school. I asked her, “What will they do tomorrow?”
I can tell you what will happen the rest of the year. These children will walk home alone the rest of the year. I guess the parent’s made their token effort. I have seen 2 children almost get hit by cars and 2 children hit on bikes coming home from school.
Parent’s have got to make sacrifices over the almighty job.
My husband and I have – it is really hard, but none of my kids has had to bike or walk home alone to an empty house.
My older sons have graduated from college. My 14 yr. old daughter will always be safe and I will know it.
Impossible daily, for most adults to fit in, such a trip suits few.
Never mind that we can’t afford to live near a decent enough school unless both parents are working full-time. It’s worldwide and it sucks…We are supposed to be magicians, to have cars available at the exact moments the children are required at the beginning of the day and when they are ejected into the streets to congregate with those loving mates who don’t necesserily turn boredom into miscreancy.
You don’t mention the age of the children in question. My first thoughts would be to do some combination of these options: (a) set up a carpool; (b) make sure my kids have a group of buddies to walk with; (c) buy my child a bicycle; (d) walk with my child and call it my workout; (e) ask Grandpa to give them a ride or walk with them. It really depends on the age…
Hope you find a solution, but remember it is your job to look out for your children’s wellbeing, not Uncle Sam’s.
BTW, I walked 5 miles to school barefoot in the snow and it was uphill both ways. LOL.
Best wishes to you!
i live in wauwatosa, and go to the schools in the wauwatosa school district. starting this year, my older sister will be taking us to school and taking us home, but last year my mom would have to take us to school on her way to work, and we would have to take the milwaukee county bus home. the prices on the bus are way too expensive ($2 for people 12+) and it would cost $40 a week for my mom to get us home if my sister didn’t drive us.
but the kids that come to our schools who live in milwaukee (not wauwatosa) ride one of those yellow buses that’s paid for by taxes. also, for sports practice (like cross country or track) only kids that live in milwaukee get to ride the buses home- kids that live in wauwatosa have to figure out a different way home (like parents, even though most parents work and would be late at 5pm).
i agree with you 100% that the schools should set up buses to pick people up from home, or from a couple of bus stops scrattered around the city so the students don’t have to walk too far.
