Is it better to go into architecture or web design?
I used to work for an architect, but I left because he was a miserly old fool who cared more about how many hours you worked as opposed to how much you were worth.
Any suggestions?

I’d say architecture provides the greatest range of stability.
Sorry to put it this way, but practically any DOLT (look of the word if you must) can call him/herself a “web designer.” But it takes REAL SKILL… real knowlege to take into consideration physical “damands” of a customer with the physical limitations of things like: gravity, space, costs, properties of materials, etc. etc. etc.
An architect must be the “mediator” between what a customer wants to have in a building and 1-build codes, 2-physics of earth, weather, building material limitations… etc etc.
A web designer just has to make something “look nice.”
You need a whole lot more “smarts” to be an architect. If you have any chance at all, why don’t you contact a couple of architectural firms and ask to “visit” with them sometime so you can ask them questions. I’m sure they will be glad to answer all your questions and even give you helpful suggestions that you will find invaluable.
The PBS program NOVA just re-aired a program called, “Building on Ground Zero” regarding the building of new buildings and what “codes” should be changed in light of the 9/11 WTC collapses. It was tremendously interesting, and just “sealed” in MY mind the need for GOOD architects and architecture… and that we will ALWAYS NEED them… GOOD ones. If you have a chance to see that program, or get a copy of it (via the internet… on the PBS website… remember, it was a NOVA program)… please do so.
Good luck, both in the National Guard, and in your future endeavors!
Web design can be done vocationally and you can pick up a few certifications here and there but architecture for grad school should be your choice!
We always need bluidings.
