Is age 20 too young for med school?

This fall, I will be an incoming freshman absolutely set on becoming a doctor. My school doesn’t have an actual “pre-med” concentration (U of M Ann Arbor), so I was thinking of exploring around for a proper major

.

However, I do already have 49 credit hours, and was hoping if I could find some advice on how to schedule my next few years in school.

One of my thoughts is graduating in 3 years– two seems a bit unrealistic– but I have no idea what odds are of success, let alone the drawbacks of an early shot at med school.

I do however have an involved history with Karmanos, so finding good clinical volunteer work shouldn’t be very difficult. Also, I am in the undergraduate research program currently enrolled in the biomedical division.

Any advice would be helpful. Although I have heard that the average age of med school students is now 26.

As for the social aspect, I’m pretty much done with partying adn willing to sacrifice that part of college.

I totally understand your concern. I am a youngin as well going into medical school. I will barely have turned 21 when i start. Honestly, medical schools really do not judge based on age, but they will take into consideration you are graduating a year early. Some school will definitely ask you questions about your decision, they like students to spend 4 yrs doing their undergrad, they think it will make you more well rounded. However, when and if they ask those questions you just need to be confident and show them that you are mature and prepared to handle what med school throws your way. So do not shy away from this opportunity just because of ur age, just make sure you are prepared. Also your university will probably have health fairs where med schools will come and visit, talk to them, let them know that you are graduating in 3 yrs, see what they say. Its always good to get the inside knowledge 🙂

Good Luck!

don’t worry about the average age, if anything help lower it! then you can get it over with and don’t have to wait till your 26 to go to school. if i was interested in med school, i would do it asap, but i’m going into financing.

David,

Sounds to me that you are a very determined young man. I would recommend that you do undergrad for two years, if possible but you’ll be in hell. It is just too hard, but from the sound of things, you can be the person to do it.

Good Luck and keep me updated!
