Honey–you need to calm down. Don’t let people in HS scare you into believe that you MUST figure out what you want to do with your life right away. It’s a total lie.

You have until you’re a junior in college to declare a major. Your first 2 years are going to be spent taking boring gen-ed classes like English, Bio, etc.

Look into sports mangament–I have a friend who graduated with a degree in athletic management (not the official major though–forgot it) and is now working for the Houston Astros!

I don’t know much about the sports but since I’m in a computer related field…

Computer Science… its software based… very heavily dependent on math. Basically its programming very elaborate programs/software.

Computer Engineering… its hardware based… very dependent on math/physics/chemistry. Basically its the dedicated major similar to Electrical Engineering but specializes in computer hardware type design (think chips).

MIS – Management Information Systems… its kinda like more hands on application of technology into the business world

IST (Penn State exclusive I think) – Information Sciences and Technology… its kinda like IT consulting for businesses

IT – you can get a 2 year associate degree at a community college and become an IT guy for a local company or a Geek Squad type guy.

Some other things to consider… technology is everywhere so even if you become business oriented, there is a good chance you will be using computer related programs and stuff (you could always minor in MIS or something). At my work, project managers and even the aluminum welders use computers.

Sports has a wide variety of majors like Sports medicine, kinesiology, etc. You could also go into a business related major and try to aim for a job in a sports field. My one friend is in marketing and works for ESPN.

Basically think of what you want to do… what you can picture yourself doing.. for the rest of your life. Then decide what majors you need to become that person. You are on the right track narrowing it down. Take your time.. you don’t have to declare a major until your junior year. Maybe go to a bigger school which has a lot of options, take a math class, chemistry class, business class, some kinesiology class, etc. Then start deciding what you like more and what is more realistic. Most majors will need a math class, science class, electives, etc anyways so feel free to shop around a bit.

Personally, I was Computer Engineering before I switched to IST. I personally felt like Computer Engineering wasn’t for me. I needed more of a business type lifestyle with interactions with other people and whatnot. After the switch my sophomore year, I couldn’t be happier with my decision. Right now I have a nice career and a great resume for future opportunities.

Um, I just finished my second year of college and I just now figured out what I want to do with my life. (And who knows, I might change my mind later : P )

Anyway, I’de say start going crazy with computer engineering…those people rule this country…in one way or another. Sports needs to be your hobby throughout life, it sounds like. It doesn’t need to be your life!

But yes…do the computer thing. If I could go back in time and start studying all that Apache code..I would have majored in math and I’de be working for Google.

But don’t rush. The only reason I found out was because I took a wholeee bunch of different classes just to test the waters and narrow it down.

Oh don’t sweat it now… I was a Criminal Justice major for a year in college and and I literally woke up one morning and decided that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. So, I marched down to the education building and changed my major. I have been happy ever since.

Yes, it makes sense to have a major that you will excel in and be interested in. Check out schools with programs in technology, sports medicine, etc. Keep your options open. What you think you may enjoy may not be once you get started in the program. It’s okay to not know right away.

Computer Engineer or a P.E. teacher, or Sports Medicine! =)

Oh, and you don’t have to push yourself to find a major yet.

The thing is though, most colleges will like it better when you have a major in mind and set of goals for what you want to do. Not only that, but it would be a lot easier to find a major now and not deal with the stress later on. EVen though you have till your junior year in college, you’ll be wasting a lot of time and money if you don’t find a major.

Neither do I know what to major in and I will retire after this year. If I were to start all over again, it would probably be computer related too. Maybe something to do with saving the earth if that is still possible. By all means, If you love something, do that. Money will follow. How about sports broadcasting?

It sounds like she may have a mental illness. First off all she really should get help from a doctor. I know I have a mental illness myself. I know first hand how it can really mess you up when you dont know what is going on. But there is good news. Try to talk to here about seeing someone who can help. The best thing you can do is go to the nami website they are a support group for mental illness, and my be able to point you in the right direction. If she wants to die she needed real help so she does not act on it. There really no more than you can do alone but be there for her. As for her thinking your crazy for talking about therapy, you may be wrong. She may be just be waiting to hear from you that it is okay to get help. The best thing I can say is if you do say something dont tell her in a way she feels small or broken. Try to nicely tell her that what ever she needs you are there for her and always will be. Talk to your counselor. It’s great that you’re thinking about your future in college.

Picking a major doesn’t mean that you are locked into that choice. Explore other options before and WHILE you’re in college.

I know someone who started with a Biology major and graduated with an English degree.

The one thing to remember is that once you’re in college, persevere, DON’T GIVE UP.

FaZizzle is right. What they tell you in high school is a lie and a scare tactic. Another thing they don’t tell you is that academic work in college is both easier and more fun and interesting than it is in high school.

Relax. Use your last two high school years to pick a college. Plenty of time to worry about a major.

Why don’t you go through your first year or two of college in general education courses (courses needed for every major) and see what feels right to you.

You don’t have to pick a major now. Do what you love and then you will be happy.
