You need to sit down and talk with your parents on this one hun.

Many enlisted persons have had their military contracts “stop loss”.

What that means is Bush decided not to honor the contract agreement with his troops and and changed it by forcing many of them to return after their tours and contracts are up.

Military recruiters are under serious fire to produce replacements for a very unpopular war. They are not doing so good at it either.

What you need to understand here more than anything, is just because you may get it in writing doesn’t mean you are going to have your service in the military the way the recruiter and you may decide upon.

Job duties are also commonly switched after you are over there.

You also need to understand that the benefits in question may not pay 100% to the college of your choice.

A college like Harvard for instance follows a criteria for exceptance and is very costly compared to other institutions.

I urge you to please speak with a member of your family who has a broad understanding of contracts. Then please take them with you if decide to proceed.

If you go straight to active duty, you most likely would not be able to attend a college as a full time student. As a Marine, you would be able to take online, and correspondence college classes that will transfer to a university, and the military pays for that so it would be free for you to do that. Your training would also give you college credit. If you join active duty right out of high school, once you were done you could take advantage of the GI Bill which gives you a pretty good amount of money to attend any school you would like.

You can also do ROTC, and you would be able to get some money for school that way and serve after you completed school in either reserves or active duty.

You might want to look into the Army as well. They offer more for bonuses, and they are the only service that will guarentee you your job. You would also get the same education benefits you would as a Marine as well. Try talking to a recruiter about your interests. Just because you talk to a recruiter does not mean you have to join. And just because you join the military does not mean you will go directly to Iraq, or to a war. It all depends on what jobs you would choose.

Good luck with whatever decision you make. You can always email me if you have any questions about what I was telling you.

Do not join the marines if you have plans of college. I am very serious about this, I have 3 friends in the military and know 5 others.. none have gone to college. Unless you plan to make a career out of the military I would not suggest enlisting. You have a 3.3 gpa you can get into a good college. Unless you REALLY want to go to the marines to fight I would suggest against this.
