If my school is big on wellness, is it alright to have a candy theme to motivate my students?

Understandably so, childhood obesity is becoming quite an epidemic and schools are taking a proactive stance. My school – one of their goals for the year – is to promote wellness (as I’m sure many schools agree upon). I’ve been coming across some really cute ideas regarding candy and “sweets” lately – things that seem to mesh well with my personality. However, I do not want to go against wellness; I certainly do not want the students to think it’s okay to eat an abundance of sweets (although, we will always reinforce this), but these ideas would be so “sweet” and motivating for them. Should I talk to my principal or…do you think it’s safe to go with this theme? Ideas? Suggestions?

save the candy for halloween,,,in the meantime, go with fruits and veggies,,,cut them cute or funny, talk about them and then serve,,,youd be surprised how many kids say they hate broccoli and have never tasted it.

what made me the maddest was when my kids would come home with a can of soda for doing something good.

Put your idea’s forward, but I would use the “Sweets” thing as a reward and reinforce moderation.

As candy aint the only problem, it’s portion size, over eating, fat content, lack of exercise, too much soda, excessive salt.

I would focus on the healthy, no cartoon characters. Look for a successful sportstar that has come from the area and see if they are willing to get behind the program.

why don’t you go along with your ideas but go with sugar free candies only? sugar free candy is more healthy than a teaspoon of sugar every bite!
