Go online and read about the universities in your state. Make a list of the institutions that have notable departments in the fields of your interest. Remember that you can spend the 1st 2 years @ a junior college taking core classes and then transfer to a 4 year college or university to complete your education.

The previous four respondents seem to have missed something.

A psychiatrist is an MD, a medical doctor, first of all. You don’t get that in undergraduate college.

Go to the best college you can get in and major in something relevant, like biology or pre-med. You must get excellent grades because admission to med school is extremely competetive. Toward the end of your undergraduate education, take the MSAT exam. Then apply to and get in as good a medical school as you can. This will take at least three years and will get you an MD. Then you apply to do internship and residency in psychiatry in a teaching hospital (this will take 5 to 8 years, since psychiatry is one of the longest of the specialties) after which you will be ready to take the board certification exam in psychiatry. Then you’re ready to practise on you own.

This may seem like a long daunting road, but look around at all the doctors out there. They all did it and they all survived. Most of them seem to be fairly happy and satisfied. So have courage. Go after it a step at a time.

your best bet, do junior college for 2 years to get all your core(basic) courses out of the way. that will give you time to pick a school that specializes in the major you choose.

Its all depending on the area you live in, your financial status and your grades. I suggest you speak to either your guidance counselor and/or a professor that you respect. Find out what they recommend. That is the best way to start. Be ready to take all the advise and weigh it out in your head. Make your own choices based on the advise and financial situation. Lots to think about…..

Actually, Michigan has a better program than most of the Ivy Leagues.
