I don’t understand…Sam hell?
Why do people say “sam hell?” I have my reasons at the moment for thinking to two words belong together, but seriously? Why?

Actually the expression is “Sam Hill” and refers to Colonel Samuel Hill of Guilford, Connecticut who perpetually ran for office in the late 19th Century. However, he was apparently so unsuccessful that except for a brief mention in the Encyclopedia of American Politics, 1946 edition, there is scarce evidence that he existed. So the saying started with “go like Sam Hill,” “run like Sam Hill” and then was modified to “What in Sam Hill?” or “Who in Sam Hill?”
In the olden days, cursing was considered taboo, so the phrase really meant, “Hell” or, “What in the Hell?”
