I am only P5, I want to know how to answer this question..?

Town A and B are 435km apart. At 0915, a car left Town A and travelled towards Town B at a constant speed of 80km/h. At the same time, a lorry left Town B and travelled towards Town A at a constand speed. When they met, the car had travelled a distance of 240km.

What time did they meet?

What was the lorry’s speed?

Let the first car left Town A towards Town B is Va, and the speed is 80km/hr (Va = 80km/hr)

Let the distance between Town A and Town B is L, and L = 435km.

Let the speed of Lorry is Vb, and the travelled distance is d = 240km

The travelled distance of first car

= L – d

= 435 – 240

= 195km

Time for the car and lorry meeting together is the first car achieve 195km (travelled distance of the first car)

Va = 195km / time

time = 195km / Va

time = 195km / 80km/hr

time = 2.4375hrs

time = 146.25mins (2hrs and 26.25mins)

First question: What time did they meet?

Meeting time = 09:15 + time

= 11:41:25

Second question: What was the lorry’s speed?

Lorry’s speed is its travelled distance over their travelling time

Lorry’s speed = d / time

= 240 / 2.4375

= 98.46 km/hr

Better for you to make a picture. Draw a line, and put the cars on the line. Make the scale, and you put the dot on the line where the cars met.

It works for me.
