Self discipline comes from inside ourselves. The first thing you need to do is to decide that you will change. Start by doing your homework immediately when you get home from school. No excuses. We are each in charge of our own destiny. You can do this. Think about how surprised and pleased everyone will be by the change in you.

Obviously your studying techniques aren’t working for you. Talk to your parents about it first. This may seem difficult but its the best thing to do. Consider, well Stroghly consider hiring a tutor. AND ask for help after class or consult the teacher(s). Make something called a ‘study hour’ where you Actually get some studying and home work done, During study hour, -No t.v or music or talking should be done..or eating, you need focus- If you havent accomplished anything in that hour then be your own boss and decide that your not going to watch tv or etc untill your homework is done. If you’re one of those people who don’t get alot of sleep, work on a new sleep schedule where you can get 9 hours of sleep. Don’t procrastinate on your work. Good luck.

well you sound ilke me. what gets me going is just say to myself “if i do this then this will happen”.

i always give myself a goal. you really want to work hard. ha from experience don’t try and push it off to the last minute. sure it works sometimes, but when you go to get the paper and see the stupid mistakes you made, then you know that you could have understood those mistakes and taken the time you needed to do your homework.

all im saying is set some personal goals and just at least try your best. don’t have other people set your goals because they are actually harder to get at.

im not saying your dumb. im not saying your stupid. im trying to be nice (unlike some people) and kinda straight to the point: Just do your homework, do your best, and you will like the results.

Also try and at least do good enough to avoid summer school 😛

Hmmm….I can relate to this somewhat. Based upon what you said, it sounds like one of the main problems is procrastination (putting stuff off until later). I used to be terrible at that, and it took some work to overcome but I am much better about it. Usually, procrastination comes about simply because we just don’t have the motivation or desire to do whatever the thing is that we have to get done, whether it be homework or something else. I’m a returning college student, and I still sometimes have to fight the urge to put something off when I should be doing it. The first thing that I would tell you is to look at why it is that you are putting off your homework. How do you feel about school and learning? Do you find it boring, or unchallenging? or maybe it’s too challenging? Maybe you don’t see the point of it right now? It could be a lot of things. Once you think you have an idea of why it is that this is happening, I would try to find a way to overcome that tendancy. If you find it to be boring or a waste of time (as I sometimes did)…anytime I had thoughts like that I stopped and reminded myself that the reason that I was in school was to get a solid education, which would allow me to get into a stable career, which meant MONEY. (Sorry to say that I had to think about things in terms of the money that it would eventually help me to make, but in the end it motivated me….I realized that getting a good job these days often means that you have to bust your a** in school. All kinds of people are trying to get the same job that I am, so I have to make myself stand out from the crowd with my education and the things that I have done to improve myself). So, what I am saying, is that the first thing that you might try to change is your attitude about going to school and learning. Mine used to be awful, until I started thinking of school and learning and homework as challenges to make me a better person. Now, it’s actually sort of fun to be able to learn something new. I actually like it (not always, but usually…). Anytime I have something that I need to do (whether it be reading a text, or doing an assigment, or a project) and I feel like “I don’t want to fu** with that right now,” I stop and say “No, do it NOW.” What I find is that I start doing the assignment, and it gets easier. Sometimes, the worst part is just getting started.

The second thing that I would try to change after your attitude (since attitude drives everything else) is to try to find out what kind of learner you are. Some people learn better by what they see, some by what they hear, and others by what they can touch/feel. You can go to this site, and they offer a learning inventory along with some helpful hints as to how to study. I would recommend it as a place to start.

Also, I would recommend that you look at how you manage your time. That is very important. I bought a day planner with a yearly calendar, and I use it to write in all of the important dates (like exams, due dates for projects, quizzes, reading assignments). That way, I always knew what was coming up, and I could plan the amount of time I needed to study. You can also divide up your reading assignments into smaller chunks each day. By doing so, you aren’t trying to read a whole chapter in just one day, but a bit at a time over several days. I recommend getting into the habit of taking notes in class and reveiwing them a little every day. There is this saying that I once heard….”You start studying for the final exam on the first day of class.” Sounds odd, but it is the truth…most people are into cramming. I used to do that, and I found that it didn’t help me, and actually stressed me. So, I started studying, reviewing, and reading according to my planner. I did a little each day in each subject…and when the test came around, all I had to do the night before was some brushing up and final review.

I could go on for a long time about things that you could do to help with your studying. E-mail me if you would like, and I would be glad to talk with you some more on this. I would like for you to be successful (and, by the way, you can be a successful student and still have a “life” outside of school). So, email me if you want….hope this helps.

You just need to study and take things seriously. Get all your home work done before going out and having fun. this is what you have to do.

good luck

You just need integrity and discipline. Each minute that you choose not to do your homework is a minute that you are choosing to fail. It is no one else’s responsibility but yours.

Choose to succeed or choose to fail.
