You can’t. They don’t have the concept that school and a good future go together. My son is a teenager and gets it but still doesn’t put the effort in. I just make sure he does his homework and question him about his work to see if he is ready for a test. I’m hoping it will kick in soon but until then I have to do the kicking ( more like pushing)

12 is a tough age. They’re old enough to see through the “I’ll buy you ice cream if you get all A’s” but too young to care about “if you don’t get good grades you won’t get into college.” I’d just make sure they are in their rooms doing homework for a certain amount every night and make sure they show you their completed assignments. maybe talk to the teacher–it could be that the kid is advanced for their age and bored with the “easy” assignments.

Give him/her an incentive to do better. I gave my kids $2 for every A they brought home. Of course when they got older I raised it to $5. They always made good grades and is older now and doing well in college. Just a suggestion

Make school sound fun. Show them what life will be like if they study hard; show them the rewards life will give you if you get good grades and do well in school (i.e. getting a good job, supporting your family once you have one). Tell them what life could be like if you don’t do well in school and don’t take it seriously. I hope that helps.

In addition to the other tips, let them know that colleges start looking at grades and tests from as early as 7th or 8th grade, so the work they’re doing now is important to their future.
