The best way to prepare for an English exam is by first knowing what aspects or elements are being tested. The instructor should provide that information. Examples might include the following:

If the test covers literature–poetry, prose, fiction, essays, etc., –then the elements may include rhyme, meter, alliteration, assonance, sonnet, free style, ballad, etc. for poetry, plus style, diction, vocabulary, voice (first person, third person), plot, statement of objective, summary or conclusion, thesis, coloring, foreshadowing, etc. In addition, it helps to know something about the author.

If the test covers English grammar, then you need to focus on sentence construction–subject, predicate, placement of verbs, adverbs, nouns, articles, prepositions, etc.

English, as a school subject, covers a lot of different areas and material. By knowing the specific aspects or elements of the material covered, you are well on your way in preparing for the exam. Approach the matter as you would an outline–from broad to more specific. Concentrate first on learning how the outline fits together and then study the various parts in descending order.

Think about it all the time. Every time you think or say a sentence, go over what is the subject and the verb and all that. Look up words in the dictionary and let yourself get distracted by the definitions of other words you didn’t originally intend to look up. The best way to prepare, of course, is to study. But if you try to relate the subject to other things in life that are important to you, you will be able to use memory tricks to recall important information. Good luck on your exam!

if u have a good understanding of moderate english meanings and skill of a good interpretation, there is nothng to get tensed.Knowing the overview of a lesson in mind is quiet enough. If not, u have to learnt them by-hearted, for the sake of exam..still u need to first grasp the meaning and key points of a particular lesson.
