How can I reopen my son’s elementary school library, this year or next?

Very long story, but essentially the town I live in has a very tight budget, and many things have been cut. One thing, of many, decided by the school department to cut their costs was to close the elementary school libraries. I think this is a crime, and unacceptible. It is, for some reason, something that just got under my skin and stays there. I am involved in the local Ed. Foudation, and that may be a good place to start? What other options are there? Thanks, Michael

Also stress the fact a library is at the core to the educational resources and environment of any educational entity. No other department can so dramatically effect the entire school community. Honestly they’d be better off cuting Art or Music or Phys Ed. Not that I think they should do any of that.

You could check into staffing the libraries with volunteer parents.

This wouldn’t allow for any new books/magazines, etc. to be purchased, but fund raisers such as book fairs might help with that problem. If you can show that there is a need for the library and a plan to keep it open without school funding, you might have a shot. Then work to get your libraries back to fully funded parts of your child’s education. I hope you have good public libraries to use. Good luck!

I know how you feel! The community I live in has a library, but no kids books! My stepdaughter and I took it upon ourselves to start collecting used kids books to donate to the library.

You say you are involved in the Ed Foundation, but have you thought about simply volunteering one day a week at the school as the librarian? I don’t see how the school could possibly turn down a volunteer.

get people to sign a petition to reopen the schools library. if the library means as much to everyone else as it does to u then getting it reopened should not be a problem at all.
