If your really sick don’t go to school. If you feel your sickness is not going to be a problem in school then go to school, but if you feel like crap during the school day then go to the nurse.

You don’t say what type of sickness you have had, but one of your parents can arrange for the nurse’s office to keep medication on hand for you. That way, if you start feeling bad during the day, you don’t have to suffer.

Here are some good, common-sense study ideas that I think will make your workload more managable. Use the ones that work for you!

1. Break your tasks down into smaller chunks. For example, four assignments due in 8 days = 2 days per task. Take the hardest one first, and give yourself no more than 2 days to do it! Once you reach that goal, take the next hardest one, and finish it in 2 days. And so on…

2. Make a rule and promise yourself to stick to it: For every 45 minutes you work on your assignments, you will give yourself a 15 minute break. If you do this faithfully, you will be done in NO TIME! Keep a clock or timer handy!

3. When you are on a 15-minute break, or if you have completed a task before the 2 days are up, HAVE FUN!!! You can go outside and enjoy the fresh air and get some exercise, or just relax in front of the TV. You don’t have to feel guilty, because you know you have the situation completely under control.

4. If possible, run by the library and get any books you are assigned to read on CD or tape, so you can listen and read at the same time. Not only will time fly by, but you will remember what you read a lot better than you would have otherwise. This method also increases your vocabulary!

5. If you have any writing to do (like an essay): Break it down into smaller chunks, ie, (1) research and planning, (2) first draft, (3) proofreading, (4) final draft. It will be a lot easier that way!

6. If you get stuck on the computer a lot playing games or IM’ing with your friends, set a time limit (see the 15-minute rule). This is a really big problem for a lot of students.

7. Some people need more movement when they learn. You might be able to do your work more easily if you are swinging on a swing or riding an exercise bike while working. Even jumping up and stretching every 15 minutes might help you to concentrate.

8. Certain foods will give you the energy to study. They are called “brain foods” for that reason! They are: Salads, raw vegetables, and meat. Things that make you sleepy: simple carbs such as chips, pasta, rice, bread, french fries, and sugary foods. Ice water is a great pick-me-up, and if you add a little lemon or lime juice to it, it’s very zingy!

9. Make sure you are getting a good night’s rest. When you sleep, your brain is busy organizing and synthesizing all the info you learned all day. Rest is also vital for good health.

Best of luck to you! And I hope you feel better soon!
