Help me please!!!?

I need to work backwards. Donna had some pens. She traded 4 pencils for each pen. She found 2 more pencils. She put 2/3 of her pencils in her pocket and gave the rest to her teacher. 5 pencils were stolen from her pocket. If she had 7 pencils left, how many pens did she have to begin with?

1)she had 12 pencils in her pocket (5+7) before they were stolen.

2)12 pencils is equal to 2/3 of the total pencils she had before. thus she had 18 pencils before (12 divided by 2 = 6. 6 x 3 = 18)

3) if she found two pencils she would of had 16 before she found them (18-2)

4)if she trade 4 pencils for each pen she had 4 pens to start of with (16 divided by 4)

don’t worry if you cant completely understand how to do these kind of things, i remember when i was quite young i had probles but as i got older i started to understand these problems and could eventually do them myself. and by the way, you should always ask a teacher or a family member to explain things. its much easier and quicker 🙂

If Donna has 7 left after 5 are stolen from pocket, she had 12 (7+5) when she gave 1/3rd to teacher (6)(2/3rds of 18=12, 1/3rd =6). She had 18 after she found the two, so she had 16 when she traded the pens (18-2=16) for pencils. if she traded one pen for 4 pencils, then 4x=16, x=16/4; x=4. She had 4 pens to start.

Don’t stress out on these. Just add them up in sequence. Good luck the rest of the way.

5 stolen

7 left

12 left after giving the teacher 6 which was 2/3rds of 18 which left her with 12, of which 2 she found.

so she actually had 18 pencils after she found 2 so when she was trading she only had 16 she traded for and 2 she found….so she had 16 pencils that she traded 1 pen for 4 pencils

16 pencils divided by 4 pencils = 4 pens

since 4 pencils = 1 pen

the answer is she had 4 pens
