Have the Internet and text messaging affected the school performance of today’s youth?

and their overall intelligence level?

If so, has this been a positive or negative effect in your opinion?

It definitely has.

I think attention spans are shorter, students are no longer capable of devoting extended times to studying one subject.

IM has led to a whole “new” language and spelling, and it’s definitely carrying over into academic life. Students need to USE their spell check and learn that “wat” is a temple NOT an interrogative!

Students are finding it easier to cheat! If you don’t believe that, just look around up here.

On the up side:

I think they can process more information quicker.

They have a technical ability that allows them to adapt to new things faster than their parents.

It enables them to expand their horizons and interact with people from all over the planet.

I do likewise have the same question. I find that many seem to get the idea that the shorter the better in regards to all communications with others seems to be the in thing today. I can not blame it all on text messaging alone but I am sure it does contribute. I am getting old,but at times with all the abbreviations in use and the short cuts with the new words at times makes simple communications difficult to understand. At times I feel I am trying to read or am hearing something being explained to me in a foreign language or else maybe my hearing is failing. Once I do finally understand what was said I find that it was the chopped up words said or written that was the problem.. It may not be effecting the brain of the of the one who texts a lot, but it sure is effecting my brain, one who very seldom sends text messages OK.

Yes just like TV with the previous generation, and radio with the generation before that…not.

As far as cheating goes its easier to look at a small folded up cheat sheet than it is to try and whip out a cell phone and get info, and smart instructors make students clear the memory on calculators before an exam.

Technology can be good or bad depending on how its used, if you allow your children to watch educational programing then they are likely to learn a thing or two, but if you let them watch garbage which only has entertainment value then they probably will be worse off for it.

We all have an id side that wants instant gratification, thats why it’s important for parents to make sure their children develop good learning habits early and are enthusiastic about their own learning. Other wise they’ll end up like so many people in this country who don’t read, don’t ask questions, are easily pacified, and get all of their information from Fox News.

For me its neither. I’m an exceptionally well student, and I love using the internet and text messaging. It hasn’t effected me in a bad way, it actually helps me communicate with my friends more, because I live farther away from them. For other it shows that is a negative thing. For the less intelligent or slackers, having the internet and texting is bad because it focuses on other subjects not relating to school.

it certainly affects the performance. the overall intelligence level increases with a certain limit of using the facility. if students r giving more time to internet than studies it affect adversly. so have a keen eye and get good results.

I would not agree to that.

I’m 13.

Yet, I am still online answering questions.

I think that going online and answering questions could also help me to know more about the world especially for the subjects Geography and History.

I think that it is alright if we are able to revise for at least 2 hours each day regardless whether you are tired or whatsoever.

Regarding the text messaging, I guess you are referring to SMS.

Communicating with people using SMS is also not a big deal. You can share your opinions with people and build friendship through there. That is, people you know and not people you dont know.

Do you see my point? (x

Today’s Internet make messages showed very quickly, it teach youth some good thing, and tell them some bad living way. The affection sometime is outlived.

Beth has summed it up perfectly. I think there is a global trend in IQ levels on the rise, however EQ levels are heading in the opposite direction. This is almost certainly due to the Internet and mobile telephones.
