In America, freedoms are based on individuals. Thus, the individual has the right to bear arms. However, in a school environment, the freedoms are based on the entire group. An individual is not allowed to carry a gun because the school is responsible for the safety of the entire group. While most students could carry a gun to school without shooting anyone, the school is responsible for the few whackos who would go on a shooting spree.

I know this example is at the extreme end of the spectrum, but it clearly shows why there are fewer “freedoms” in a school environment.

You have absolutely no freedom in school. Its like a prison. You are required by law to attend and then follow and adhere a regimented, strict curriculum. The only freedom they allow you is if you want mashed potatoes or spinach with that chicken.

Well, I think we have enough freedom. We have the freedom to create our own clubs, decide what we want to wear, what classes we want to take—of course, every school has a few regulations, which are necessary in order to prevent chaos.

Depends on your definition of freedom. We are free in the fact that we can choose our own classes and clothes. But we are not free in the fact that we are required to take certain types of classes.

Students in public schools are not protected by the constitution or most laws in general. Public school is meant to produce average, well behaved citizens, willing to conform and unable to break out of social norms.

Students are not allowed to move about freely. They are allowed to make very few decisions about their own futures (or their present lives). The controlling environment disallows students from pursuing knowledge different from the curriculum that non-educators outline.

I tell my kids that school is jail for children, and to just play the game, jump through the hoops they put out, learn the ropes, and never allow them to break their spirits. It is tough to get through school, especially since the students are CHILDREN.

This is a catch 22 situation. You are free as long as you obey the rules, but if you are bound by rules, are you truly free?
