First grader tallying what is the point?
I’m asking this because my son is having trouble getting it through to him that every fifth mark goes across the other 4. but this is the only problem in math that he’s having.

The purpose of tallying is to keep track of what you’re counting in an easily visible way. If you didn’t put the 5th mark across, then you’d just have a bunch of lines all over the place. Crossing it makes it easy to see that there are 5 in the bundle. Counting by 5’s is easy for most people, so that’s why it’s done.
To help see why it’s important, use tally marks for a number like 25. Have him draw out the tally marks his way (without crossing the 5th one) and then count them out. Then show him the other way and have him count them out. It should be easy for him to see how much quicker and easier it is to use tallies the correct way.
