First Grade – Word Families and Dictation Sentences – What??

I’m in my 4th year of college and I have no idea what these things are. lol.

My son has a list of spelling words as well as ‘word families’ and ‘dictation sentences’ on the sheet.

‘at’ and ‘an’ are under ‘word families’

‘The cat is in the can.’ and ‘The bad can go in the hat.’ are the dictation sentenses.

I’d love to help him stufy, but I don’t remember any of this; can someone please explain this to me??

If you indeed are Chinese, then congratulate yourself; you write a lot more coherently and use better grammar than many Americans. Don’t take the test scores so seriously. Its how well you personally understand the subject the actually counts in the long run. I flunked English in the second grade even though I’ve been reading since age four. And I believe my grammar is better than most.

Word families are words that utilize the same sound/spelling patterns: bat, cat, hat, mat; words that rhyme (think Dr. Seuss).
