Does the teacher need to apologize?
My 5th grade child had notes & emails sent to me because she had ” Missing Papers”. Well I found the paper in with her graded paper that have been sent home over the weeks. (Glad I Keep Them) I sent a note along with ALL the papers my child got in trouble over. Suddenly with in a few hours, went on line to check and All her grades went up. I mean from 48 up to 70.From 59 up to 95. I was not given an explination. She just did not LOG the grades. I punished my child for not keeping up with her papers and not making an effort. I have a conferance with the teacher in the morning. Just wonder if I should ask her to apologize to my child. It is HER fault my child was punished. That how I feel about it anyways. It was not just 1 paper mind you. Yesterday it was like 10 papers. Today only 1.

I can understand your frustration, but teachers are human, too. I agree with some of the other answers, wait to hear what the teacher has to say before demanding an apology. You may be surprised and she may offer one without your requesting one. Plus, there are a few other things to consider: The teacher did her job in the sense that she realized work was not entered and she followed up with notes and e-mails. It is partly the student’s (and parents’) responsibility to also follow up with missing work. I commend you for keeping all the graded work, but why did it take so long for you to check into it before punishing your student? Also, if you demand an apology from the teacher infront of the student, there is a chance that you are modeling disrespectful behavior. The teacher may also feel as if she is being attacked and this does not do well to promote open communication between teacher/parent/student.
I don’t feel that the teacher is blameless, but there is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes on in a classroom when it comes to getting grades done and recorded. If you feel that the teacher needs to apologize to your student, then by all means let her know. But please be sure that your frustrations are expressed in an calm and respectful manner.

Wait until the meeting and LISTEN to what the teacher has to say. Did she give out graded papers for the students to look at and pass back in for posting in the grade book? I had one teacher that did that. Of course I do not know this teacher, but I used to be one; I think that the majority of teachers want to work with parents as part of a team working for what is best for the student. There is always the exception, of course; go to the meeting with an open mind and stay calm during the meeting. If anyone gets ‘bent out of shape’ let it be the teacher (parents have a lot more power in the school system than they realize and teachers usually want parents on their side); then question the teachers motives.

Do not assist on an apology. You may win the battle and loose the war. No teacher is perfect and it appears this teacher does a lot of grading. Perhaps you can suggest that she can find help with her record keeping. It might be a good task for the class mother.

You should ask her to but it doesn’t mean she will. I would just be sure to be nice and understanding at the same time. MY mom used to in a yell at my teachers… lets just say that those teachers were not the most helpful people after that….
