A lot of parents, especially in very religious households, just don’t talk to their children about puberty, sex, or contraception because they either find it inappropriate or embarrassing. If schools didn’t implement sex education programs, how would those kids learn about it in a responsible way? How would they know about safe sex or STDs? Reading about it in the encyclopedia isn’t the same as being told by a teacher who can instruct on safety and dangers. And teaching abstinence without teaching about sex, safety, and dangers beforehand? Does. Not. Work. Has it ever worked to tell a kid “I can’t tell you why, but don’t do that”?

The people who are so against schools teaching sex education, and shield their children from it by refusing to let them take the class, or religious schooling – they’re the ones who are so horrified and embarrassed anyway when their kids end up pregnant (or get another kid pregnant) because they didn’t know any better.

Teaching kids responsibility for their sexual encounters and not to treat sex like a fun little joyride pasttime goes a lot further than just commanding them to not do it.

I’m from the ‘old school’ and don’t really know why it’s become so crazy these days. I guess because of advertising, tv shows, and plain out lazy and sorry parents who don’t care in teaching children about this themselves.

I don’t think it’s good for them to be exposed to it so much, but it’s out there. What are we to do? It’s the parents job to help the kids thru this.

But, some are going to be overcome by this and not listen to their parents anyway.

Sex is on TV and in movies and music. The truth is, students bring what they know to school. Schools have decided not to ignore the issue because there are so many awful misconceptions that it’s actually better to correct these than pretend like we have no idea what the kids are talking about.

for young kids its not ok, but since teachers and boards of education know that they’re gonna see it casually a lot on tv and around their peers, they think they should tell them how to be careful and the risks and such of it. its not really right.. but i can’t argue with them.

We live in a very open and uncensored society today. Sexuality is not as suppressed today as it was fifty years ago.

More and more parents are homeschooling their children or putting them in private schools.

Sex ed at school? or is it the Bratz dolls and the other “fashion trends” for 8 year olds?

I really don’t give a damn. I make my own decisions, not the TV.
