What’s the best way to pick a school district?

I don’t currently have any children, but my husband and I will be in the market to buy a house in the next couple of years and we do plan on having children 5-10 years in the future. I know that schools are a big deal and I want to factor in the quality of the schools when looking for a house. What should I be looking for?

You can either go to realtor.com, put in the zip code and ask for the school report or if you are working with a realtor, they can provide you with some school information about the areas you are looking at.

Each school district has a report card which is available on line and at the district office. You can find out about teacher preparation, length of time that teachers have been in the district, teacher and student absenteeism, percentage of students going to college, how the school district does on standardized teats as compared with other districts and if the scores are going up or down compared to past years.

Also consider that different schools in the same district may vary greatly in their quality.

You should also visit the schools and get your own ideas, Speak to some parents in the area and get their views. Attend some Board of education meetings. Look at some district publications and get on their mailing list if they have one.

On other thing is that school districts change, People move in and out. Teachers retire and obtain different jobs. Leadership changes as well.

Good luck and continue to plan and to look ahead.
