Only if you’re in 4th grade. Increase the time by 10 minutes for every additional grade. Homework reinforces knowledge learned at school. It will allow you to participate in class, and ask pointed questions if you don’t understand something.

Yes, I do. But the assignment must reinforce what has been introduced and/or covered in class. Just as importantly, the homework results should be reviewed promptly, preferably the following class day. I know, I know, teachers, you barely have time to cover information once. But, homework assignments that never earn any more attention seem, to me, to be almost insulting. If the schools can’t or won’t do the follow-up, then I guess parents or tutors should fill the gap. The learning process should be: teach, execute/practice, reinforce.

I attended a small school that was the focus of an entire farming community. That community expected excellence. From fifth grade through my senior year in high school, I averaged three hours of homework a night, and I was an “A” student. This might have been a little excessive, but, when I started college, I tested through most freshman-level courses into sophomore honors classes. When one of my English professors assigned a term paper, my big-city-school-educated classmates panicked. I, however, had been doing at least one full-fledged research paper EVERY semester since eighth grade. All my homework had paid off.

NO< NO< NO. I donot think children should have home work. The cirriculum should be planned in such a manner that everything they need to know is taught and reinforced daily in school. I would rather see children attend school 12 months a year than be sent home with homework. Think about the kids who are getrting up at 5am to catch buses to school, parents who work and have 3 or 4 kids all with home work and projects, dinner, a baby and a husband, PTSO, band, football, soccer, ballet, baseball and who knows what other kind of practice. HOMEWORK IS UNFAIR AND AS A PARENT I AM TOTALLY AGAINST IT. Assigned reading, with no reports just a slip signed indicating that the reading was done is acceptable. They can do this on the ride to one of these many activities they insist will make a child well rounded.

I don’t think teachers should aim to assign 40min or more of homework per night because some students will take much longer to complete what “should have been” an easy assignment. I believe, as a future teacher, that anything that is not finished in class should be the majority of the “homework” that students have to do at home. Some topics, such as math, might need a few extra pages to practice during the week, but for the most part I believe that the homework assigned on top of classwork is unnecessary.

I think homework is a good way for parents to know what the child is learning. It also provides extra practice for what is studied. There is a certain amount I think is appropriate. 40 minutes is too much for K-2nd. 15-20 minutes is more appropriate. And add about 5 minutes for each grade level above 2nd. No homework on weekends, I would agree with.

Yes, because once you get into collage, you will be having 4 hrs. and up a night on homework. What are you going to learn if you get no homework? Sure it sucks, but its how you learn and develop. As far as public schools, why would they be any different from any other school, it is all education, are you saying public schools shouldn’t get homework, so they can fit into a stereotype of uneducated kids?

Absolutely. We used to do homeworks for 4 hours almost every night back when I was in public school.

A fair good 2 hours dedicated to your homework and understanding the concept is essential. Then you can get some rest!!!

personally, I hate it and put it off at any cost. So I end up doing an hour worth of homework fro 5 classes at midnight adn just.. yeah. It’s bad. I think a few simple worksheets is enough. But then again I’m in highschool taking honors classes so my homework is evil -.-

I wish teachers actually followed the 10 minutes a night thing. Last year, my junior year, I had 4-5 hours a night.

I think at least some homework should be assigned. When I was in HS I NEVER had homework and now that I am in college I have a hard time dealing with all of it!
