No, they don’t. more like $60-75,000 tops unless some kind of star status.

And they live the way they do because they have families and wanted to continue their research from student days, not become officers in a corporation and work their way up the social ladder.

this is complicated. assistant professors usually do NOT earn a 6 figure salary. on the other hand, it is very common place for professors, especially those paid by endowed professorships, to be making 6 figures. just look up some of the salaries for professors in the ivy league–its really not as hard to find as one might think.

Not necessarily. Professor salaries usually range from $60,000 for an assistant prof to $120,000ish for the dept head. But that varies a lot based on the dept and the school

Professors spent 4-8 years in graduate school earning their degree. Graduate school costs a lot and pays little to nothing, so you learn to get by on what you have, and many people keep that up later in life. If your car is still running, why get a new one? If you have a small family, why buy a huge house?

Professors shouldn’t have to become shallow and materialistic like the rest of us. They’re better than that.
