Can children still feel a sense of independence if they have to wear a uniform?

Dressing alike brings out so many important individual qualities other than “who shops here and there.” All of a sudden hobbies, intellect, and interests come to light. School’s not all about what someone is wearing (or not wearing) that makes them noticed.
There are approximately only 180 eight-hour school days in a year. Seems to me that there are plenty of days and hours left in a year to show “independence” (?) by wearing all the new fads that everyone else is wearing!
There are statistic to show how a school is improved by making uniforms mandatory. Test grades go up and violence goes down (just google it). And it puts all students on the ‘same’ soical/economical playing field. School uniforms also address school safety issues. It is easier to identify those that do not belong on campus.
Your clothes aren’t what gives you a ‘sense of independence’. Think about it if a child is made to wear a uniform from 1st grade and every grade after that there won’t be a problem. Can you imagine a 5 year old claiming lack of independence? The problem comes when you make kids in JR/Senior high transition to uniforms because those are the ‘showing off’ years.
Kids can dress as they wish/parents allow after school, on weekends and vacations.
Some try to say this would cause hardship to those that cannot afford new clothes every fall. Again this is a false complaint as there are always government programs to subsidize cost. And school uniforms are less expensive than the name brands that most teenagers strive for.
Schools that have adopted the mandatory school uniform policy also leave room for those that do not want to wear uniform allowing those students to ‘opt out’ with parental permission. Usually though it’s a small percentage that actually ‘opts out’.
There is so much information on this topic. Again just go to google and type in ‘School Uniforms’ or go to a pro-con site.
