There is some kind of saying about painting tea kettles black or something like that. What is the actual saying and what does it mean?

The previous is correct – pots and kettles (they meant the sort that you boil water up in) were originally made of iron and sat on cast-iron ranges, or next to the fire. They gradually turned black from use. So one was as black as the other.
