x = smaller interger

x+2 = larger

x+(x+2)=176

simplify and subtract 2 from both sides

2x = 174

divide each side by 2

x = ???

then find your larger…

x+2=???

87 + 89

the easiest and most productive way to do it is with a calculator

divide the 176 by 2, and you get 88, go one down, and one up, to get 87 and 89, therefore, those are your answers

the algebra way to do it is to make : x + (x+2) = 176 (where x is the lower of the two odd integers)

then you add like terms, making it : 2x + 2 = 176

Then, you subtract 2 from both sides: 2x = 174

and finally, you get that x = 87

and since it is the lower of the two consecutive odd integers, you add 2 to get the next one

Actually odd numbers are best represented as (2x+1) and the next odd integer would be (2x+3) so :

(2x+1) + (2x+3) = 176

2x+1+2x+3 = 176

4x + 4 = 176

4x= 172

x= 43

so the first number is (2x + 1) which is (43)(2) + 1 = 87

the other one would be (2x + 3) gives 89

If you use x and x + 2 you get even numbers instead of odd

Suppose x is the smaller integer, then x + 2 is the larger one.

Then the sum of the two integers is x + (x + 2)

You can surely work it out from that.
