Sacrafice some science/math training for acting classes?

Until recently I set my mind on being a double major in microbiology/biochemistry and a double minor in computer science/mathematics. If I go into a science field it will be human genetics. I’m only taking chemistry as a major because I think it would look good in helping me get into grad school, and math as a minor because I only need 6 hours to get a minor in it and thought it would look good.

However recently I have been interested in taking acting classes. I rather think I would enjoy them, though I have never really thought about it prior to this. I saw an actor perform that really inspired me. I’ve taken a couple of drawing classes in the past, but that was a while ago. My universities art department sucks, and I’m feeling really burnt out on science.

I don’t have room in my schedule to take extra acting classes, so if I do, I’d have to cut out a major or minor. I just wanted to get other people’s input on what they would do in my posisition.

Well, if it were me (but you’re not) I’d go ahead and take the acting classes. I had only one major and one minor and a ton of electives in all of the arts. And I still got into a good grad program. They’re a good release, and an extra advantage to acting classes is that they can help you in things like public speaking & presenting yourself confidently and interestingly, which could help if you’re considering a job in academia.

As for getting into grad school, all those majors and minors may look nice, but the important thing is to have a good idea of what research you want to do and be prepared for that. If the extra training in math, chem, or computer science is not essential, they won’t care; they’ll see on your transcript which classes you’ve had and know that it’s enough.

So if you’re not that attached to chem or math, you could maybe drop chem to a minor or stop with the math. OR maybe you don’t have to. You could audit the theatre class(es) if you’re not already taking a course overload. If you’re only auditing, you can skip nonessential assignments like papers, won’t have to worry about a grade, and the class won’t take too much of your time. Final possibility, you could look into summer school or even something like summer acting workshops sponsored by a theatre group in your community (which may cost less than summer school).

In grad school, everything will be focused on your research. Undergrad is a great time to branch out, because afterward you won’t have much time for anything else.

Good l–… er, break a leg.
