Math SAT Subject Tests?

There are 2 Math SAT Subject Tests

Level 1

and

Level 2

Whats the difference? And do they count as two DIFFERENT Subject Tests? So will you receive a certain score for each?

They do count as two different subject tests, and you will receive two distinct scores if you take both of them. The Level 1 test requires knowledge that goes up through Algebra II and Geometry; Level 2 goes all the way up through Precalculus, so you have to be further along in your math studies to be prepared for that one.

Although the Level 1 test is often thought of as “easier,” that may not be the case, as long as you’ve taken Precalculus and have a good grasp of that material. On Level 1, you have to get all fifty questions correct to get an 800, but on the Level 2 test, you only have to get 43/50 questions correct.

The scaling for the two tests makes it easier to get a higher score on the Level 2 test.

In addition, a lot of colleges prefer seeing the Level 2 test. Some even require the Level 2 test or use it as a placement test and will not consider the Level 1 test for those purposes. In my experience, taking the Level 2 test is pretty useful, but taking only the Level 1 test is pretty much useless.

Yes, they are different subject tests, and you will receive different scores on them. However, if you are trying to get into a school that recommend that you take 2 subject tests, don’t submit Math 1 and Math 2 scores for both of them.

Math 1 goes through Algebra 2, and Math 2 goes through trig analysis/pre-calculus material.

I took Math 1, but only because I was going to a liberal arts college, and I didn’t have enough time to review the extra Math 2 material before exam day. If you are going into a Math fiekld or a Science field (and certainly if you want to be an engineer), you will need Math 2. Some other schools might ask for a Math 2 score, so check that out with the colleges to which you are applying before you decide what test to take.

Math 2 is soooooooooo hard. Thought I could do well-it was the 3rd one I had taken that day and I was the only one left taking a third one. I aced a very hard Math Regents exam that we take in New York & am in Calculus. It just didn’t come together for me.

They are different, Math 1 is easier. Yes they are two different tests, and you will receive a different score.

well…i live in california…and if u want to enter the University of California school system….they say that u should take the math two test….the two is harder….i took the subject test math 2 because california universities don’t even count level 1 as a subject test….they don’t like that test…so i assume other colleges in other states…are like that????

1 is easier, though not by much. They can count toward a satII requirement for college, but it isn’t recommended at all to do that, since it shows you aren’t sure of yourself.

I recommend the second. It involves more trig, btu isn’t that much harder. However, both are tricky in that you tend to run out of time. I also strongly suggest gettign the Princeton Review book for it. Helped me out soooo much, especially concidering I never took the trig class in school and skipped to business calc!

Good luck 🙂
