As the dusty door opened, I saw the shoemaker huddled over his tools, deftly and determinedly shaping the stiff leather into a graceful curve. The raw smell of leather and brass permeated the air. Lined up on the sill were pair after pair of tidy, strong shoes of various sizes but identical in design. As he turned to greet me, his brow glistening with sweat, he offered me a kind smile.
