Well, “pwned” is basically a substitution for “owned” that probably came about as a result of the close proximity of ‘p’ and ‘o’ on the keyboard.

Misspelled words are kind of an internet meme that grew out of fps gaming, starting around the quake era and really growing with half-life (more specifically counter-strike).

That’s likely your best bet anyways 😉

It’s like “owned” but more like taking a pawn, the lowest chess piece in chess -“pawned” — as in taking over, or being master over whatever is being pwned. Seems like it’s used when a degree of humility is needed…

i believe “pwned” came from a cool guy, who accidentally spelled it wrong, but he liked it, so he kept doing it. eventually it caught on…
