A question for all the native speakers of British English.?
I’m translating a movie – the situation is as follows: Two guys are talking about the beating their badass employee got the previous night from a guy named Paul. One guy says: “Give him (the guy that had got beaten up) a bung, tell him we dropped it on Paul’s toes and he’s coughed up , it’ll soften the blow.” What’s a “bung”, “dropped it on Paul’s toes” and “coughed up”. Can u use some other words or phrasses instead of these. Appreciate it. Thanks.

without having actually seen the movie it sounds as if the beaten employee is being given a payment (a bung) in compensation for the beating he took from Paul, In jest and by way of explanation they tell him it was dropped on Paul’s toes (in other words Paul has also taken a beating from them)and Paul has given them the information they required(coughed up) and they also probably took the money from him to make the payment.They think this will ease his pain from the beating.

A `bung` is a side payment, and `coughed up` means he`s paid up money he owes or given information, usually under pressure. Not sure about `dropped it on his toes` though.
