Would a separation between male and female students in schools benefit in any way?

Don’t flame me for chauvanism or sexism, I’m just thinking: what if boys and girls were separated in class? What would happen? Would it benefit grades and learning somehow, or would there be total chaos and confusion and anarchy?

I went to an all girls school for elementary school and highschool. It was good in highschool because we wore uniforms and didn’t have to compete with each other over clothes. This was great b/c my family was middle class and there were a lot of rich girls there. It was also nice b/c there really weren’t any cliques or peer pressure. We could come to school with or without makeup and just be ourselves. Then we could meet guys outside of school. So I think it was easier to learn. So, when I went to college with guys, I didn’t have too many worries. It was a different environment, but I adapted to it pretty easily.

I actually believe that in some instances it would be better. I believe that boys and girls learn in different ways. As a general rule – boys need more activity and hands on type things. Girls are very visually oriented when learning.

Yes – this is a stereotype and no stereotype is 100% accurate, but thing about this: Walk 100 girl children and 100 boy children past a mud puddle: What percentage of the girls will jump in the puddle and try to get each other dirty. What percentage of the boys will do this?

Check out the girls and boys during recess. As a generalization – what are the girls doing and what are the boys doing? Betcha they’re separate and working on different activities.

I don’t think boys and girls need to be totally separated all the time or even think this would be good. But – it might be a good alternative for some classes.

wow
Of course it benefits. That’s why there are private all boy and all girl schools out there. Students are always distracted from learning when they are around the opposite sex. In addition, research shows that boys and girls learn in very different ways. If teachers could focus on teaching a particular sex using teaching methods that engage them specifically…than more learning would occur. Some research shows that boys require more hands-on learning and noise, whereas girls require a more intimate & quiet atmosphere.

Separated public classrooms don’t happen due to political correctness and the logistics of changing a system that’s been in place for a long time. There are also all those people that say it doesn’t reflect the real world in which we are combined in.

However, in troubled schools where there is no learning happening anyways….it would be very benefitial. (just my opinion)

At one time Title 9 of the Education and Secondary Act forbid having separate schools for each sex in the public schools. That has recently been changed so that it is now allowed.

Many parochial schools and some private schools have a long history of having separate schools or divisions for boys and girls.

Some people think that it is a good idea to have these separate schools because one sex does not have to show off to the other sex and as a consequence the school is more peaceful, has fewer discipline problems and learning is enhanced.

Other people think the reverse. They believe that it is unnatural to separate the sexes and feel that the interaction between them is good and that it replicates the outside world.

There is no definitive answer so i have attempted to give you both sides. You come to your own conclusion.

I really believe that having both males and females in a classroom helps balance everyone out. I go to a co-ed public school, and once we went on an all girls field trip. By the time I got back I was sick to death of girls! It think boys make a class environment fun. They ask questions girls may shy away from because they’re embarassed. I also think it’s important for people to get to know the opposite sex because in life, we’re all thrown in together.

haha yes, one word, hormones…..

seriously though…

in eighth grade i wrote an arcticle on gender equallity in the classrooms. theres a web page i used as a reference u might find quite useful.

There is some debate on wether or not students do better in segregated classes sure, they may focus better but that is only a small percentage and when they leave the school system, the two genders mainly regard eachother as different species developing (later in life) into even further adult ways of saying “no boys allowed.” not to even start on feminists, “women beaters”, and before u know it, bam, we’re back in the dark ages.

ah well enjoy the arcticle 🙂

They do it at some schools. In some ways its good and in other ways its bad. They dont have to feel like they have to impress the opposoite sex. But at the same time they might not be able to communicate with the opposite sex as well. As for grades I dunno. I could see the girls doing better in school but I could see the guys acting more immature because there are no girls to settle them down. I believe girls would get better grades but guys would suffer. Just my opinon though.

Yes. It has been proven that when boys and girls are seperated boys scores in math and science tend to go up and girls scores go up in language arts and social studies. Not that a girl couldn’t be good at math or science or vice versa, but statistically it is likely to happen. However, it isn’t good overall, because it screws up your development and can even make you sexist.

i say no because it may be a huge indifferent change, have to need time to get used to, and it is hard for girls not to be afraid of guys. and vise versa. I think it will only make learning enviroments worse because the reason i go to school is to learn, yeah but my top is friends, opposite sex interaction, and social status, I think that would be a bad idea

do you like to be attentive to why it makes the information while this occurs? because of the fact it is not elementary. Male instructors try this plenty greater in many circumstances than woman instructors. or perhaps then, pondering instructors of the two genders, it is not everywhere close to elementary adequate to be considered an “epidemic”. Edit: Why did I even project answering this? Paul pronounced incredibly a similar element, basically with greater words.
