Just as in World War II, the U.S. public was opposed to dealing with Europe’s problems. The first World War started in 1914 and it was not until 1917 that the U.S. joined the Allies. Most of America’s sentiment was with the British and the French despite having a strong opposition by German immigrants. The U.S. Senate did not ratify the Treaty of Versailles because of the fear it would draw the country back into European problems should another outbreak occur. After the war, the U.S. experienced an economic surge known as the “Roaring 20’s” which ended due to an inflated stock market, which crashed in 1929. The casualties in World War I were horrific in that the machine gun, artillery, chemical weapons (ie mustard gas and other nerve agents), tanks and even air forces where used against military tactics that were several hundred years old.
