Mood brings life, excitement, fear, drama, romance, humor (ect.) to a story. Mood helps us, the readers, to have a deeper uderstandig of the story.

The mood is the “feeling” of the story. A scary story isn’t scary unless the mood is set. A comedy isn’t funny unless the the joke is built up right. How do you feel when you read stories? The mood creates feelings in the reader. Choose your words well, and your readers will react the way you want them to.

It sets the tone for the type of story that is being told. If it’s a comedy you’l want a light happy mood. If it’s a blood filled slasher tale then set the mood dark and scary. The mood is the key to a great story. It’s the same way in books, movies, music, TV, and face to face talk.

The mood or tone of a story is what will make it different form other stories. There are only so many themes: love, revenge, quest etc… But when you add mood you really add your distinctiveness to a story. It is the difference between “The Princess Bride” and “Lord of the Rings”.

Imagine being told a ghost story in a candlelit cellar. Imagine exactly the same story being told to you between innings at Yankee Stadium.

Wouldn’t have the same effect, would it?

Think of mood as the (imaginary) setting. Movie directors use camera angles, lighting and music for the same purpose.

put it this way; if you were describing a death, you wouldn’t put words in like extravagant and make it sound all happy.
