I don’t know, but I’ve seen this occur on literally EVERY college campus I’ve ever driven through! I don’t know if it’s a question of being young and thinking they are indestructible, or if it’s arrogance, or something else entirely. Every year at my own alma mater, at least a couple of kids get hit because they were stupid and assumed that a driver would see them; it got better for a while after one girl was killed (not the driver’s fault – just the way the car struck her), and then when that “wore off,” things went back just as they were.

You’d think they’d have the sense to look both ways if they can get into a university, but I’ve seen this phenomenon at universities all over the U.S. – University of Virginia; University of Washington; University of North Texas; and Colorado State are just a few that come to mind where I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Very strange, no question.

People (college students or not) think that because ‘pedestrians have the right-away’ that they never have to watch out for cars. They dont realize that that doesnt mean they have the right-away EVERYWHERE! Only at designated areas.

My opinion?? A car is bigger, heavier, and faster than me. If we make contact…IT is going to win! I would rather live than get across the street 30 seconds faster.

Besides that, college students are (90% of the time) rich @$$holes who think they have the right to do anything they please!

Its not just college students who do this, school kids and a few others (i can’t think of polite term for them) do it as well

3 reasons:

1> They think their cool

2> They have a death wish

3> They think their Superior.

Truth is there D*@K HEADS!!

If it’s in the crossing line, the law dictates you to stop for them to pass. Otherwise, they think they are hotshots. Don’t run over them (even if it’s darn tempting) it will cost more then what you would be ready to pay! Honk them and make sure your windows are up and doors locked! 😀

Because they feel as though they have the right to. If they’re not walking in the cross-walk then you don’t have to stop for them.

To get to where they are going, because they don’t actually have a car.

Do you mean on campus? Because they believe they have the right of way.

Its probably the only way to get you to respect the crosswalk they are in.
