Dentists must build clientele; hire, pay, match soc. security with holdings, insure against liability, Workman’s comp. and unemployment all employees (qualified assts. as well as accountants, tax specialists and lawyers).

Some have the luxury of having a group (family maybe) to join. Most will have to lease or buy suitable office space; furnish & maintain it; And the big one, buy hi-tech med. equip. (x-ray, drill, sterilizers etc.)

Most will be financing this while having 8yrs. (6yr. min.) of stugent loans to pay off . You’ll work every day (inc. Sat.). BTW, notice all items on this list are for office & employees, Nothing for yourself.

Now, once you build your patient list, you’ll make HUGE $. mostly billing Ins. Co. if they’re willing to work.

Anesth. on the other hand, (I overheard this from 2 Docs. at a recent ER visit) can hook up w/a Hosp., They’ll work three 24hr. shifts

per week. They nap or watch TV in the Drs. lounge until they are needed. While the dentist has greater earnings potential, these guy will make $150K+

It’s an excellent profession if you can stand the smell of an operating room at the hospital, cause that’s where you’ll be spending most of your time. There has to be an anesthesiologist at every operation performed by each doctor in every hospital in the country, so you can be in very high demand. I don’t know what the salary range is, but I’m thinking it’s a fair size chunk of money, I know a couple of these folks and they seem to live quite well. Probably any good med. school can get you started.
