when to underline a book title?

do you only under line it the first time you write it or everytime you mention it? and do i have to name the author. im writing an english essay on these two books for summer reading.

yes, underline it every time you mention it. And it would be better for you to mention the author at least once.

You underline a book title when you can’t put it in italics-like when you are handwriting it. If it is a story within a book then you put it in quotation marks. You have to put the title of the book in italics everytime you mention it and you only have to name the author once, usually when you are introducing the book.

If you are using a word processor then use italics for book titles. Underlining was just used with typewriters since there was no italics. I would not repeat the author after the first time.
