These are statistical tools: We use them when we want to find the trend. Data is collected historically and inferences are made.

These all are measures of central tendancy – a single value that attempts to quantify the “average” value around which the values in a data set tend to cluster.

1. We use mean or average when we want to find average purchase or sale price of a product. There is arthmatic mean, geometric mean and weighted mean

2. Median is used to find the value of the middle item in a data set, when the data are arrayed from the lowest to the highest value.

3. Mode is the most frequently occuring value in the data set

In regard to what subject? They are all measures of central tendency, used to extrapolate information about the performace of a set or group, but without knowing more about what you are studying, I am not sure how to answer further.
