Whats the best way to learn a new language by ones self, without taking a class or using a tutor?

I dont have a lot of free time on my hands, but when i do i want to start learning some foreign languages, so something that would be easy to pick up and put down instead of something that would have to be on-going would be great.

However its not just the language im intrested in but the culture as well. So if whatever you reccomend also has history, pop culture, and other little tidbits that would be nice.

I’ve heard of people using cd roms or audio cd’s but I’ve never heard of anyone having much success with them. Learning another language is a great experience and something that will benefit you immensly. Unfortunately for you, unless you are unlike everyone else, the best way to learn a language is to use it. That means at least taking a course with someone. The very best is to go to the country where they speak the language you are trying to learn. Its like learning any new skill, it takes practice, so the more the better. You could learn some basic phrases with a cd rom or audio cd, but you most likely would never be conversational by exclusively using them. Once you got enough down from the cd rom or audio cd you could then go to the country for a visit or even better, an intensive lanugage course.

Good luck and stick to it.

One of the best programs around is Rosetta Stone. I speak 7 languages and I’m learning Korean by myself right now.

get cds that you can listen to in the car or while your getting dressed or anytime that you would normally listen to the radio. this way you learn the language the same way you learn your favorite songs.
