I’m not sure what you mean by the Carl Brashear situation. Master Chief Brashear worked his butt off to become a Navy Diver; then when he lost his leg; worked his butt off to become the first amputee ever to be certified as a Navy Diver. Then, he worked his butt off to become the first African American Master Diver, the first Amputee Master Diver, and the only African American Master Diver.

He attained the grade of Master Chief Petty Officer. The law mandates that no more than one percent of the Navy’s enlisted personnel can hold that grade at any one time.

The Navy awarded Master Chief the Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal. These awards, in the 1960s and 1970s, were hard to attain, much moreso then than now; and are indicative of truly exceptional performance and achievement.

However, most Navy personnel with whom I have served over the past 26 years are less interested in another colorful 75 cent ribbon to put on their chest than they are with a heartfelt “thank you” from his command and shipmates. The respect you earn from your shipmates is the most valuable reward.
