Often they are used interchangably, but they do mean different things. Radiology Technician is an older term, which is not correct anymore. A person who is fully licensed to do all types of examinations involving radiation is a Radiologic Technologist. Rad. Technologists can do any x-ray on any body part, fluoroscopy (esophagram, UGI, BE, HSG, arthrograms, for example), CT scans, and they are eligible to take another licensing exam, so they can do mammograms. X-ray tech or radiology technician is not a proper term, when you are describing people who are fully licensed.

A radiologic technician is a person who has a limited license. This means that person can only do certain exams, such as extremities (bones of the arms, legs, hands, feet). Radiologic technicians will find it hard to get a job in an imaging facility or hospital because they are limited! They cannot do many of the exams that are done in those centers. Many radiologic technicians work in orthopedic offices, where only extremity exams are taken. I have worked in hospitals and free standing imaging centers, and I have never worked anywhere that also employed limited technicians……
