I enjoyed Sorority women when I was in college. They are fun to be with and each Sorority on campus was pretty much unique in attracting the right sister to fit their style.

THE SINGER
In the beginning, I believe the idea of sororities and fraternities was a way to help build self esteem and commaradarie with incoming students and students who had some experience on campus. It was also a prestigious relationship that many black families, in particular would be able to help their children ‘melt’ into a society which was supposed to guide them toward a career and goals with fellow members ready to extend their hands. Unfortunately, it became a way to divide blacks also. The light skinned females would join AKA, and the darker skinned would join Delta. Many of these women would continue their relationship with their sorors well into their retirement years. It was a prestigious thing. When I came along – I did not like what I saw. The girls seemed to enjoy and get a thrill of degrading their potential ‘sisters’ – making them stand behind them holding their food trays – waiting for the big sister to ‘get up ‘ before they could eat. This was too reminding of the white lunch counters in the south! Additionally, the things they expected you to do AND attend classes and perform at your best was almost impossible. I refused. While there were sorors in my family – none of my family members encouraged me to ‘join’ ,unless I wanted. This was strictly a personal choice. I decided that singing was the best “group” I wanted to be in. I believe that there are positive and negative influences in any frat or sorority, it depends on the commitment of the members to each other and to their communities.

The ones I dated could not go 2 full sentences without a reference to either their sorority or “sisters” it was really irritating.
