What is the relationship between school administrators and students? Are they employees and are we customers?

Well as a long-time public school student like most Americans, I’ve always wondered the specific relationship between school staff and actual students. ie. Are students (in a true economic sense) the customers and the staff (from janitors to deans and principals) the employees? Realistically it would seem students at public schools would have the majority of eductaional power (not destructive but eg. can demand a schedule change or change of teacher at any time). I guess the main question is, what is a student in a public school? What could one best be compared to in the outside world?

You would not be a customer of the school in the sense that you are saying. The public schools are given money and grants by the govenment and while yes you pay some tuition, the amount that you pay is far less than the amount that you would have to pay otherwise.

In regards to your question, your relationship with the administration is more like you are a ward of the government during the school hours. Your care and well being is their primary concern because they are the ones that will be held responsible if you get hurt.

Sorry to say but, no, students are not the customers.

Students are people who are still in the formation stage of life. Students do not have a fully developed mind yet nor do they have the experience to be critical examiners of the elders around them.

The people who decide the curriculum for any given public school are really those outside the school system, this is made up of the school board, and public government.

The curriculum that students are required to learn is determined by what the society and employers want the students to know or be able to do when they graduate.

The administrators and teachers are the people who are to make sure that the curriculum is taught to the students.
