Tech Math 1 is an applied arithmetic class. It is yet another way for the public school system to avoid the fact that all high school students should be required to take 1 year of algebra and 1 year of geometry (at the absolute minimum). White it will count toward your high school graduation requirements, it will NOT count toward your college admission requirements.

In the increasingly tech world we live in, math is more important than ever since it is the the basis of that world. Future high paying jobs will (and are) requiring a high levels of numerical proficiency, much higher than the panzy math you do at high school, so it is only logical to get kids to some sort of basic level, so they have a larger set of choices for later. It teachs a very particular mindset, not just being precise and logical and all the usual stuff they tell you, but also how to hold many interelating patterns in your head about a situation and how to see that situation from different angles. What else…if math (and other sciences) are considered hard, then don’t you think it is useful when applying to college to have done well at it, when the masses don’t and focus their efforts on soft subjects.

My guess: Technical Math 1 is math that relates to the real world, hands on math and easier for some to understand because of how it is taught.

P.S. It is a lower level math class. Before your friend changes math class, they need to really think about it.

Why was they enrolled in the class to begin with?

How are their basic math skills?

Is math a difficult subject for them?

Do they learn better in a hands on environment?

Math graduation requirements?

What do you want to do when you grow up?

I feel it is better to take the correct level of a class and be successful then one that I would struggle in all year.

Take this one this year, move to a higher level after doing well in this one.

Imagine you’ve got a job at Subway. If there are 4 pieces of meat on the foot-long sub, how many go on the 6-inch sub? Every job requires knowing at least basic math, and many jobs expect you to be able to do algebra or more advanced math. No, they shouldn’t let 14 year olds pick their own classes to ‘prepare for classes’. Most college students change their major at least once – they’re 18 or over and can’t make up their minds. If they decide they want a good-paying major, they need to know math, and they’re not going to want to start over from the beginning. We don’t let you pick your own classes because, like a 5 year old who would eat candy for dinner, you don’t know what’s good for you.
