What is MLA format?

Im a junior in highschool and in English 3AP, or AP English Language and Composition whichever you like, and i don’t know what MLA format is. I heard from someone that we are suppose to write all our essays in this format. My english teacher from last year didn’t teach it to us, he forgot to and didn’t have time to at the end of last year. I have him again this year for English 3 AP, he said he doesn’t mind. However, another English 3 AP teacher at my school, who i think is the best but strictest English 3 teacher–or thats my teachers opinion–requires it.

So, what is MLA format?

And for anyone who has taken the Subject A exam, how was it like? My goal is to make it to a UC.
