i posted a poem here long ago, but am afraid of theft– what do i do?

i posted a poem here months ago, to see what people thought of it.

i want to enter this poem for an academic assignment, but am afraid someone might have copied it after i posted it online, or might copy it in the future.

my poem wasn’t that great, but i don’t like the feeling of having this poem on the internet and entering it for a school assignment at the same time…it doesn’t feel right, because someone might copy it and declare it their own, and that would get me in academic trouble!

is this possible? what can i do?

First of all, can’t you just delete it?

Secondly, it says you joined just today, so how could you have posted the poem months ago?

okay.. you posted a poem on this site here a few months ago.. what is the likelihood that someone is reading your poem, writes it down, AND goes to the same school as you? Very rare.

I use poetry.com.. it automatically copyrights your poems. This is the best bet for you to do.

Also type in a few lines of your poem to see if it comes up anywhere under yahoo.com.

If it doesnt, then you should be safe, but i would recommend saving your poem on poetry.com right now to gain copyrights to it.

Also, I kind of figure you had a different account a few months ago, go to that account if possible, if not, type in your old username on yahoo.com and it will bring up your question and you should be able to find your poem.

You can’t avoid that possibility. Electronic text is easy to rip off. But if you’re worried about being accused of copying someone else, there are a couple of ways to protect yourself. One, you can distribute your poem among your friends or relatives (or even better, an unbiased person) before posting it online — that way they can be witnesses that you wrote it earlier. Or you can save it in a document of its own; if you right-click on a document file and select Properties, you’ll see that the file has a “Created” and “Last modified” date. You can use this evidence to show that your file is older than the copycat’s.

there is not any longer something you’re able to do. young ones (in comparison to those people who have been already adults while the internet became invented) do no longer look to contemplate that posting stuff on line is an open invitation for the entire worldwide to understand your organization. What you’re able to do is be taught from this adventure and not turn your very own/expert company into public company. If a theft happens, regrettably it could have been your fault, because you published it for anybody to repeat. Lesson discovered.
