You answered your own question. You can get a diploma without a degree but you can’t get a degree without a diploma

A diploma is a lower qualification than a degree.

Typically the levels are Certificate then slightly higher is Diploma and then higher again is Degree. Finally you reach PhD (DPhil) which is higher than a degree.

Its different in different countries but a diploma is a lower qualification and hence takes a shorter time to obtain than a degree.

Note: Don’t be confused by people saying the diploma is the piece of paper you hang on your wall. While the parchment CAN be referred to as a diploma, when you are talking about levels of qualification, a diploma is an award you receive for study, like a degree or PhD…

A diploma is a piece of paper saying you have a degree. Is the diploma all they give you in the course–no degree? That would just be a piece of paper saying you took the course. (That’s fine, if that’s all you want’need, but you need to as if it counts toward getting a degree.)

a diploma is a physical representation of your degree. you hang your diploma on the wall. you write your degree on your resume.
