What does it take to be an E.M.T?
How many years of college?
And…any other information you know of. I think that is what I want to be so I need to start getting ready for it. Should I take human anatomy in highschool?

I was a EMT-ST for 6 years for a vol. rescue squad in Virginia. Every state is a little different on guidelines so I can only tell you about Virginia. 1 they don’t have ST any more so that is a little different anyhow no you do not need college most rescue squads will send you out for training for free when you become a member. I would defiantly take anatomy in school just because that will give you a advantage also pay attention to math if you ever want to become a paramedic and be able to give medicine. Other then that you need to be a fast learning, have good people skills, be able to handle crisis situations, able to move quickly, Be able to manage stress and .
I loved being a EMT but it is not for everyone. You will see death, you will see abuse, you will see blood and vomit, Not everyone will be happy to see you and others will thank god. I found it pretty interesting so it was not hard to me.

E.M.T courses are usually offered at community colleges, you should check with your local community college and see if they offer the E.M.T program. Taking human anatomy in H.S is a good idea, but I’m not sure it will transfer to a college. But having the background and knowledge of human anatomy won’t hurt either. Congrats, its great to see someone so young have an idea of what they would like to do with their life!! Good for you…

community college or the military. I got mine in the Navy. took an accelerated course, 8 hours everyday, even on weekends. Something like 8 weeks of intensive training, then took the National Registry Test. The community college route is usually two years. you need some prerequisites, like anatomy and physiology, biology, that kind of thing. you’re still in high school, so yes, you should be focusing on science classes. apply to school early, this is a popular class that fills rapidly. you should also know what you’re getting into. you will see the worst things that people do to each other. this is a high stress job with crazy hours and low pay for what you do. good luck with your decision.

Around here, it’s a 7 month course at junior college, and apply to E.M.S. as a driver. Get some time in, pass the course, take a board exam and pass it and you’re an E.M.T.
Another 6 mos. coarse at junior college after some time on the job, pass another board exam, and you’re a Paramedic.
Just to throw this in. You can be a registered nurse with an associate (2 year) degree, in about 2 and a half years.

An EMT goes through a training program and then gets his/her certification. It usually only takes three months to complete, and then you have to get your recertification every two years. You can get paid for being an EMT, but a lot of EMT positions are volunteer positions.
