At your age i volunteered with the mentally handicapped at a summer day camp. I enjoyed it.

Do you like working with young children? If so, you could choose a Head Start classroom or preschool classroom. Some of them have age limits, so you would want to discuss this with your adviser, but I think Head Start would accept you and walk you through getting your clearances.

Since you like animals, what about a state park? Maybe you could work with a park ranger. That would be interesting and fun, and give you some outside time. Can’t beat fresh air and sunshine!

You like English, right? Did you think about something in journalism? Maybe you could work at a local newspaper publishing company, or a television or radio station. Journalism and broadcasting might be really interesting.

Or the library. I always wonder how they manage to keep all those books cataloged and organized and in the right places. That might be a little dry though!

Psychology. Hmmm, social work maybe. I wonder if you could work with a social worker or a social service agency. This would be tough, a real eye opener. But it would certainly make you appreciate whatever you have in life.

Just thought of one more. My son at your age spent a year working in a nursing home with the elderly and handicapped residents. He LOVED it. And he loved the feeling that he was contributing to their lives in a positive way.

You could eventually work as a veternarians assistant or secretary or for the SPCA or Humane society or other animal rescue society, if you like animals. So for now you might see if your local Humane society could use your help. A lot of them are in desperate need for volunteer help. Yes to clean up after the animals but also to walk the dogs and feed the cats and birds and sometimes to look after some interesting other animals that they have there. There are also other animal rescue societies that deal with wilder animals and birds that you might contact. You could contact environmental agencies that often want volunteers to clean up parks and creeks for our wildlife and plant trees or involve you in an interesting concervation project. I also worked as a volunteer for an oldage home when I was young — you can read and talk to the elderly and push their wheelchairs for them, but often they feel guilty about keeping a young girl inside. However the institutions are glad to get your help and so are some hospitals. Daycare centres might also appreciate your help. You might be a teacher later on. At your age I had my own babysitting job established since I was elleven set up but I also did modelling. They chose me, but perhaps you could surprise everyone with 2 jobs . Some stores pick their own models for flyers from their employees or their employees kids like zellers or the Bay. Go to them and see if they would consider letting you be in their next flyer if it corresponds with your work experience time. You only get one or two part days where you are needed for this. You could also ask a modelling agency. Do a regular other job and this one might be the envy of your classmates — the girls anyways. I ended up at 12 modelling on tv.
